(Des Moines, IA) -- A Mosquito in Des Moines has tested positive for the West Nile Virus. This has caused an increase in spraying and treatment throughout the city. The positive mosquito was found in District B, however both District A and B were sprayed on June 10.
So far, there have been no confirmed cases in humans or pets in Des Moines. last year there were 17 confirmed cases in people. The virus causes symptoms such as fever, headaches, body aches, nausea, and vomiting. Only one in five people get symptoms from the virus. There are currently no treatments or vaccines available, but if symptoms worsen you are advised to seek medical attention.
Public health officials recommend wearing mosquito repellent and protective clothing when outside from dusk to dawn. Residents are also advised to eliminate standing water sources in their yards.
