(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Police is rolling out a special fireworks unit this Independence Day season. It is not illegal to sell or possess fireworks in the city limits, but it is illegal to light them off. Police on the unit will patrol Des Moines Parks and other public spaces in an effort to prevent vandalism and other damage. They say putting police in parks puts them in neighborhoods, which makes it easier to enforce the ban. The fine for lighting them off was lowered to $200 this spring by the City Council.
