WalletHub ranks Iowa 49th out of 50 in a national study of where people are experiencing the most financial distress. The study was based on multiple metrics, including:

- People with accounts in distress
- The average number of accounts in distress
- Change in number of bankruptcy filings between March of 2023 and March of 2024
- "Debt" search interest index
- "Loans" search interest index
