Longtime Nebraska Senator Suspends Campaign

(Omaha, NE) -- A longtime state senator will not challenge for his return to the capitol. Sen. Ernie Chambers is announcing that he filed to decline the nomination in Omaha's District 11. Douglas County Election Commissioners call the move rare. Chambers says this will mark the end of his political career, which began when he was elected in the 11th district in 1970. Senator Terrell McKinney is now unopposed in the district, but a new candidate could get on the ballot with 599 signatures by September 13.
