(West Des Moines, IA) -- West Des Moines crews will pick up tree debris from Wednesday night's storm starting Monday, August 5th. Residents within the two collection areas (purple shaded areas) are asked to have storm-related yard debris on the curb by 6 a.m. on Monday, August 5, to ensure that it is picked up.
The two collection areas are as follows:
- South of University Avenue, east of I-35, north of EP True Parkway and Railroad Avenue, and west of HWY 28 (1st Street) and WDM corporate limits
- South of the Raccoon River, east of I-35, north of SE Army Post Road and west of HWY 28 (1st Street)
Collection rules:
- Branches of any size will be picked up, but they must be placed on the City right-of-way (the area between the curb and the sidewalk) and “parallel” to the curb. The placement of branches in the same direction as the street and/or sidewalk allows mechanical equipment to load the material efficiently and minimizes damage to the right-of-way. Crews will not be collecting material on private property.
- Tree branches placed “parallel” to the curb should not be in close proximity to vehicles, fire hydrants, mailboxes, utilities or any other item in the right-of-way which could be damaged by heavy equipment during collection. Please do not park vehicles on the street. Our large trucks need room to safely remove yard debris from the curb.
- Tree material from work done by private contractors should not be placed on the right-of-way for collection. Contractors are required to haul away any tree debris that is a result of their work.
Questions? Call the Public Services Department from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at (515) 222-3480.
Compost It! Program
Residents are still encouraged to use Metro Waste Authority’s Compost It! Program for smaller yard debris such as leaves and twigs that can be bagged and branches that can be bundled with a sticker.
