(Springfield, IL) -- Illinois is getting rid of the state grocery tax.

Governor Pritzker signed a law eliminating the one-percent tax state-wide effective on January 1st, 2026.

Under the new law municipal governments have the option of imposing the tax on a local basis. Money from the state grocery tax goes straight to Illinois cities and towns.

Illinoisians saved 360-million dollars when the tax was suspended for a year in 2022.
