(Iowa) -- A national personal finance website ranks Des Moines near the bottom of the list of cities with the highest number of collection accounts.
WalletHub looked at 100 cities across the country to rank the cities in terms of the number of collection accounts, meaning someone has missed paying their bills on loans or lines of credit for an extended period of time. At which time, a lender can sell the account to a deb collection agency. WalletHub says having an account in collections can damage a borrower's credit score and remain on a person's credit score for up to seven years. The study looked at two broad metrics: collection account status and changes in collection accounts.
Out of the 100 cities surveyed, Des Moines ranked 97th. At the top of the list, meaning the city with the highest number of collection accounts, is Laredo, Texas. At the bottom of the list is Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
