Des Moines Police Investigate Eighth Homicide of 2024

(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Police are investigating the city's eighth homicide of the year. Officers were called to shooting in the 3400 block of South Union (on the city's south side) Sunday afternoon at just after 1:30 p.m. Police say they found a 21-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Des Moines Police say in statement that a gun was recovered at the scene and that they are still interviewing witnesses, examining evidence, and following up on investigative leads.

Scanner reports say the weapon was found in the basement of a neighboring home, where the suspect had fled.

No other details are being released. Police says there is no indication of any ongoing danger to the neighborhood.
