(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa State Climatologist Justin Glison says it'll be more clear later this fall, but for now it's looking like a weak-to-moderate La Nina weather Phenomenon is returning. He says right now there's a 66% chance of La Nina returning between September and November. That could mean more snow in Iowa this winter. He notes if it turns out to be a stronger La Nina, and ocean waters are cooler, it could mean less snowfall.
Glison notes, however, a lot will depend on the location of the polar jet stream. He says if it sets up north of Iowa, the state could get warmer, wetter weather this winter. He says if the polar jet stream is south of Iowa, expect cooler weather with more snow.
Glison says is abnormally dry conditions have been expanding in parts of the state, due to lower rainfall averages.
He says there has been wide variability this year and over 120-tornadoes. He says the benefit of the severe weather though, was that welcome rains that busted the years-long drought in Iowa.
