(Rock Island, IL) -- Drivers crossing the Centennial Bridge between Rock Island and Davenport will do so in the dark this weekend.

The lights on the Centennial Bridge were shut off to avoid attracting migrating birds.

The group River Action lead the initiative. They say more than 27 million birds have passed over Scott County so far during this year's migration.

The lights will remain off through at least the weekend as more birds are expected to fly through when winds become northerly today.

Residents are encouraged to turn off any extra lights to avoid attracting birds that could collide with buildings.
