(Appanoose County, IA) -- A fish caught in southern Iowa's Appanoose County, could be a record-breaker. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the fish, initially identified as a black crappie weighed 4.08 pounds and was 18-inches in length. The DNR says it was caught at Sundown Lake, which is a private lake east of Lake Rathbun.
There's a "catch" however. Initially the fish was identified as a black crappie, but it may also be a hybrid, black and white crappie. The DNR is doing further testing. There currently not a category for hybrid crappie in the state's record books. The DNR fisheries staffers say regardless, "... it is a huge and beautiful fish and one heck of a catch!"
If it's determined to be a black crappie, it would beat the previous state record for that species, which was just under 4 pounds, caught in Union County in 2013.
