(Durant, IA) -- Residents of rural communities in Cedar, Scott and Muscatine counties may lose local ambulance service. Durant's EMS Service is short on volunteers, and soon may not be able to transport patients to area hospitals for care.

Dan Sterner with the Durant Ambulance Service tells WQAD News 8 that without new volunteers the city of Durant may have to step up to fund the service, or they'll have to rely on outside agencies for ambulance service.

Those extra minutes for an ambulance to arrive could be a matter of survival.
