(West Des Moines, IA) -- Salvation Army workers got an unexpected surprise counting red kettle donations Thursday night.
Counters going through donations at Des Moines area kettles found a South African Big Five Elephant gold coin in the kettle at Scheels at Jordan Creek Mall in West Des Moines. The Salvation Army will have the coin professionally appraised, but they estimate the coin to be worth about 28 hundred dollars.
The Salvation Army's goal is to raise $1.2 million dollars this holiday season.
