A 19-year-old is pleading guilty to causing a couple's death in a two-car crash in Des Moines while going more than 70 miles over the speed limit.

Kameron D. Wright pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and OWI charges in the deaths of 79-year-old Mary Lehman and 76-year-old Fred Lehman in November of 2023 in Des Moines.

The Polk County Attorney's office says Wright was driving a 2011 Chevy Camaro westbound on East University when the car collided with a Buick Century that was turning left onto East 27th Street. Black box data from the Camaro showed that it was traveling 112 mph two seconds before the crash. The speed limit on the street is 35 mph.

Wright admitted in court he was driving recklessly and caused the deaths of Fred and Mary Lehman. He also acknowledged he had marijuana in his system.

Wright entered into to a plea agreement which calls for the two sentences for vehicular homicide to be served consecutive to each other, for a total of 20 years in prison. He also must pay $150,000 in restitution for each death. He will be granted credit for time served and will be required to pay a fine for the OWI. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 13, 2025.
