(Des Moines, IA) -- A plan to convert the Holiday Inn near MercyOne in Downtown Des Moines into affordable housing is falling through. In a press release, Greater Des Moines Supportive Housing says they haven't been able to reach a deal to buy the building and the timeline for funding is running out. Emily Osweiler, the CEO of the nonprofit, said they've spent over $500,000 to get to this point in the process.

"To say that I am heartbroken over this result is an understatement," Osweiler said in the release. "There is so much need in our community. That is why I am heartsick...we have worked towards this mission for over four years now and have been close three times. This is the closest we've been."

She said she doesn't know what the group's next steps are.
