(Ankeny, IA ) -- Ankeny Police are warning about a phone scam, where the caller claims you've won a prize.
A scammer recently claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House, telling a resident he’d won a truck, free gas, insurance and even cash for life. He even used the man’s nickname to sound legit.
The caller then told him to head to Walgreens or Dollar General for “instructions”, and wouldn't give a working call back number. Police say that's a major red flag. APD says legitimate prize organizations do not call winners at random, ask for unusual errands, or require contact through retail stores.
How to protect yourself:
• Hang up immediately on unsolicited prize or lottery calls.
• Never provide personal or financial information to unexpected callers.
• Do not follow instructions to purchase gift cards or go to specific stores for “verification.”
• Independently verify claims by contacting the organization through its official website or customer service line.
• Never purchase gift cards as payment/deposit or read gift card numbers over the phone.
If you ever receive a call you’re unsure about, call the Ankeny Police Department’s non-emergency line before taking further action. Our officers can help you determine if it is legitimate.
