Des Moines man accused of stabbing dog

A Des Moines man's accused of stabbing a dog, at least twice with a pocket knife, causing serious injury to the dog.  The dog is undergoing treatment, it's condition is unknown.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says 31 year old Michael Mitchell was arrested and booked into jail, on one count of Animal Abuse.

Mitchell posted bond and was released.

The Animal Rescue League reports the arrest stems from a Monday night incident.  Two dogs were in a fenced-in area, in the 4000 block of NE 45th Drive.  The dogs began fighting, and after they were separated, Mitchell reportedly stabbed a Pit-bull mix.   The other dog received minor injuries.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa says the dog, named Zeus, is in stable condition at the Animal Rescue League, staff veterinarians are continuing treatment.   The ARL says Zeus received multiple stab wounds requiring immediate surgery.

The ARL is asking for donations to offset the cost of Zeus’ medical bills.
