Residents of Grand Avenue condo evacuated

Around a hundred residents of an 11-story condo at 3663 Grand Avenue were routed from their homes Sunday night as smoke filled the 7th and 11th floor hallways.

The evacuees waited patiently on the front lawn of the Grand Tower for word they could return to their homes. Several left wearing only bathrobes and slippers.

Firefighters arrived shortly after 10:30pm when calls came in.  They were unable to locate a fire, but due to the heavy smoke in the hallways on the two floors and the electrical smell they ordered the evacution.

After bringing in a second fire crew they found the cause: a smoking elevator motor.  That elevator was taken out of service.

It took until around 11:45pm before the occupants of all of the floors were allowed to return.

No one was injured and all of the residents of the building were accounted for.
