The state education department's out with its rankings of Iowa schools...and it shows that in the Des Moines metro area, where you go to school may matter.

Schools in Iowa were given grades ranging from "Priority" at the lowest to "Exceptional"based on assessment results.

The Ankeny School District has three high-performing schools, and no schools below "Acceptable" in rank.  Most of the other central Iowa school district schools are ranked "Acceptable" or higher.

West Des Moines and Des Moines are the two exceptions.  West Des Moines has two schools, Crestview and Western Hills Elementary Schools, which are ranked "Needs Improvement." The Des Moines school district has 21 schools in the "Needs Improvement" category, and is the only school district in central Iowa with 15 of its schools, from elementary through high school, in the lowest "Priority" ranking.
