Effort continues to define cheese and milk on food labels

Bipartisan Senators from Wisconsin have introduced the CURD Act, or the Codifying Useful Regulatory Definitions Act. Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, says the bill would codify a formal definition of “natural cheese”, a term commonly used on food packaging that currently has no official definition:

Under the CURD Act, “natural cheese” would be defined as cheese that is produced from animal milk or other dairy ingredients and is produced in accordance with established cheese-making practices:

Johnson is hopeful passage will come quickly in both the House and Senate:

Johnson would not speculate what potential passage of the CURD Act would mean for defining milk, a dairy industry desire to stop labeling plant-based products as milk.
