Des Moines police unusual calls as rare moon approaches

DES MOINES, Iowa - Statistics show a rise in crime during a full moon, and we're just a couple days away from a rare Super Moon - Blue Moon - Full Moon combination, for the first time in 152 years this week.

It's not clear if that's why Des Moines Police were bombarded with unusual calls Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Dozens of young adults flooded downtown streets in the Court Avenue area Saturday night wearing one-piece pajamas for what was described as a Onesie Pub Crawl.  No trouble was reported but there were traffic slowdowns as drivers stopped to stare at groups of roaming adults in their pajamas and a few other costumes.

The police dispatch calls started getting more peculiar just before midnight.

Then came a series of a half-dozen gunshot reports, and this call to police came in just after 2:00 a.m.

It's not clear from the police dispatch audio what happened to the third man.  No word on any arrests.

And, about 3:00 a.m. another unusual call for police assistance.

The Super Moon - Blue Moon - Full Moon will happen on January 31.

According to a published research article in the National Institutes of Health,  the increase in crimes on full moon days may be due to human tidal waves caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.
