Barack And Michelle Obama Write Letter To Parkland High School Students

Barack and Michelle Obama

In the wake of the horrific Feb. 14th shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, people from all over the world sent messages of love and support to the students and victims there.

As it turns out, among the host of well-wishers for the Parkland students was former President Barack Obama and his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama.

The former first couple sent a handwritten letter addressed to the students expressing how inspired they were by the determination and resilience of the student protesters who have used the tragedy to demand stricter gun control laws.

The letter, which is dated March 10th, was originally published by Mic.

We wanted to let you know how inspired we have been by the resilience, resolve and solidarity that you have all shown in the wake of unspeakable tragedy.

Not only have you supported and comforted each other, but you’ve helped awaken the conscience of the nation, and challenged decision-makers to make the safety of our children the country’s top priority.

Throughout our history, young people like you have led the way in making America better. There may be setbacks; you may sometimes feel like progress is too slow in coming. But we have no doubt you are going to make an enormous difference in the days and years to come, and we will be there for you.

The couple signed the letter, "Barack Obama, Michelle Obama."

This isn't the first time the Obamas have expressed their support for young people's activism. Obama tweeted out just days after the shooting that "young people have helped lead all our great movements."

Students have led the latest charge for stricter gun controls after 17 people were killed by a former student, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, who was armed with an AR-15 rifle he had legally purchased.

Thousands of people are expected to march this weekend for the "March for Our Lives" event which begins at 12 p.m. ET on March 24th.
