Governor says "no" to tolls on I-80-Iowa DOT agrees

Governor Kim Reynolds says "no way" when it comes to turning Interstate 80 into a toll road to help pay for renovations to the highway.

The Iowa Department of Transportation quickly followed her pronouncement by saying they've reviewed a study that looked at the possibility of charging autos and trucks a toll to help pay for widening and repaving the highway.

Reynolds told reporters "I'm not interested in toll roads...Iowans don't want toll roads."

The study maintained that Iowa could pay for the repairs needed by setting up 11 toll booths and charging motorists 8 cents a mile to drive on the interstate and truckers 24 cents a mile.

Toll road proposals have been floated in years past.  It would require action by the Iowa legislature, the governor and approval by federal highway officials to put up toll gates on the interstate.
