DES MOINES, Iowa - Going out of business sales started on Friday at all Younkers stores, including four in the Des Moines metro area.
Bon-Ton Stores is closing all its locations, including 18 Younkers stores across Iowa. The Herberger’s in Ottumwa, also owned by parent company Bon-Ton is also closing.
A U.S. bankruptcy court approved an agreement to liquidate inventory and certain assets of the company before closing down.
The department store chain began in the city of Keokuk, Iowa 162 years ago.
Customers with Younkers charge cards have discovered the cards no longer work. Some wonder if the demise of Younkers is part of a wave of shutdowns of stores and major malls hurt by online shopping.
Nearly 800 Younkers workers in Iowa will be out of a job by June 5th.
