Police chases end without loss of life

Two separate chases involving drivers refusing to stop had police busy Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

A high speed chase Wednesday night ended in a crash on I-235.  It began around 9:45pm when Des Moines Police identified a stolen car and the driver refused to stop.

WHO Channel 13 reports the driver was 36-year-old Shawn Foy, who took off west on I-235.  Foy eventually lost control between 22nd Street and the Valley West Drive exits and rolled down an embankment.

He was taken to a hospital for injuries in the crash and faces several charges.

In another case, at approximately 12:50 a.m., Des Moines Police received information, and a request to locate, a suicidal person.  A little before 2a.m., that person was located near 31st Street and I-235, and a pursuit began.

That pursuit continued through the city, on the freeway, transitioning to northbound I-35. At approximately the 108 mm, Story County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted with a successful deployment of stop sticks.

As the suspect vehicle slowed, the driver fired more than one round from a pistol. A Des Moines Police Department patrol officer returned fire. The suspect vehicle came to a stop. After a short stands-off, the suspect threw his gun from the vehicle, and surrendered into custody without further incident.

There were no injuries as a result of gunfire. The 21 year old male suspect is in custody at a local hospital where he is being treated for a medical issue. Charges are expected later today. This investigation is ongoing.

The officer involved in this shooting incident is Senior Police Officer (SPO) Dustin Wing. SPO Wing is a 13 year veteran of the department, and is currently assigned to 1 st Watch Patrol. SPO Wing is also a K-9 handler. Following standard protocol, SPO Wing is on paid administrative leave.
