Lawmakers drop lawsuit against Governor Reynolds

A group of Democratic lawmakers this week asked the Polk County District Court to dismiss a lawsuit against Governor Kim Reynolds.

The suit contended that the Governor illegally transferred money to cover a budget shortfall in the 2017 fiscal year.  Democratic Representatives Christopher Hall, Marti Anderson, Liz Bennett, Bruce Hunter, Jerry Kearns, Monica Kurth and Amy Nielsen filed suit in January.

The Iowa legislature this year passed a bill that essentially legalizes the governor's action.

Governor Reynolds is still waiting on a ruling from a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa that challenges a new law mandating a 72 hour waiting period before an abortion can be performed.

The ACLU of Iowa and Planned Parenthood are also suing to block the law Reynolds recently signed that bars abortions if a fetal heartbeat can be detected.
