Crews contain large fungicide spill to Polk County creek

RUNNELLS, Iowa-    Iowa Department of Natural Resources field staff estimate 180-gallons of a fungicide spilled into a creek east of the Des Moines metro area,  but they believe they were able to prevent it from reaching the Des Moines River.

Officials say a 250-gallon container fell off a Landus Cooperative vehicle, near the intersection of Highways 163 and 316 Monday, tumbling into a ditch and into Camp Creek, which is located east of Pleasant Hill and five miles north of Runnells.

The DNR says they spill was contained to about a five mile area in Camp Creek.

Workers from Landus pumped up almost 2,000 gallons of water and product from the ditch Monday afternoon with ongoing recovery efforts today.

DNR staff have seen mainly dead minnows and chubs downstream of the spill site.
