Animal causes large power outage in north Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa-  An animal got into an electrical substation this morning, causing thousands of power outages n northern  Des Moines.   

MidAmeircan Energy says it happened just after 10 o'clock at the 2nd Avenue and Broadway substation. 

At the peak, more than seven thousand homes and businesses were without electricity.  Crews were able to reduce that number to 5,700 by 11 a.m.  Outages are expected to be restored shortly.

The outage extends north of the city limits,  to the 61-hundred block of NW 6th Drive, south to 23-hundred Amherst Street in Des Moines, east to to 19-hundred east Euclid, and west to the 32-hundred block of Seneca Avenue in Des Moines.
