DES MOINES, Iowa - The City of Des Moines is trying to get people living in flood zones to look at the new flood maps.  New flood maps are adding almost 300 more properties to flood zones, joining 2,500 homes already on the list.

"The City has held a number of meetings already, working with the Iowa DNR and National Flood Insurance Program, to educate people on the new flood plain maps that are coming out, that are published by FEMA."  Steve Naber tells WHO Radio News.

More than 1,200 homes were damaged or destroyed in flooding in Des Moines last summer.

Naber says right now there's a reduced cost for flood insurance, for the next 12 months after the new FEMA flood maps come out.  The new maps cover not just the City of Des Moines, but also Polk County and Warren County.
