Iowa Supreme Court Justice leaving court

DES MOINES, Iowa-  Iowa Supreme Court Justice Daryl Hecht, of Sioux City,  is leaving the court, due to health issues.

Hecht has been undergoing skin cancer treatment.  He missed two days of oral arguments this week, due to side effects.

Hecht plans to step down from the court December 13th.

He was appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals in 1999 by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, then elevated to the Iowa Supreme Court in 2006.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds released a statement this afternoon:

“I am grateful to Justice Daryl Hecht for his nearly 20 years of service to the State of Iowa as an appeals court judge and then Supreme Court justice.

“I respect and support his choice to focus on health amid this battle with cancer. I am sure the decision was not an easy one to make, and I wish him and the entire Hecht family only the best as they turn their full attention to his health.”
