Friday Iowa snow predictions as storm moves in SNOW MAPS

National Weather Service

DES MOINES, Iowa - A massive snow storm is building early today, so large at 5:30 a.m. that it already covers the entire state of South Dakota an a big part of southern North Dakota, and it's coming our way.

While the morning commute will not be affected by this storm, the evening commute will.

Snow is expected to start in NW Iowa by the late morning. It will sit over the northern two tiers of Iowa counties, adding up quickly by the time it expands into central and southern Iowa during afternoon.

The evening commute will likely be slick and visibility will be low as the wind picks up.

That strong wind will be pushing much colder air into the region.

A widespread 5-8″ of snow are expected across Iowa and into Western Illinois and Northern Missouri by noon Saturday, but blowing snow will still be an issue throughout the afternoon and evening.

A Winter Storm Warning is posted for NW Iowa by late Friday morning, and Central, Southern, and Eastern Iowa by the late afternoon Friday.

Snow continues overnight and wraps up by noon on Saturday.
