Boy killed in icy I-80 crash in western Iowa

CASS COUNTY, Iowa-  A nine-year-old Nebraska boy died in an I-80 crash in western Iowa last night.

The Iowa State Patrol says Joshua Tavares, of Grand Island, Nebraska was in a vehicle  that slid off the highway and rolled into a ditch in Cass County. 

The Iowa State Patrol reports says a 2004 GMC driven by a 40-year-old man was traveling west on I-80 at around 10:30 p.m. near the Marne exit, when the vehicle went out of control due to freezing rain conditions. 

Authorities say Joshua Tavares, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.  The driver, 40 year old Jesus Cantero-Perez, and his passengers were all injured in the crash. 

The passengers injured are identified as:

  • Wendy Tavares, 35
  • Ashley Tavares, 11
  • Kimberly Tavares, 12
  • Yamilet Cantero, 11
  • Jonathan Tavares, 15
  • Emanual Cantero, 10

All seven of the injured were taken to Cass County Memorial Hospital.  Four of the injured children were not wearing seat belts according to the Iowa State Patrol.  Both adults were buckled-up.
