Iowa State Patrol warns of glare ice on roads

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa State Patrol is warning drivers of glare ice caused by freezing mist on roads and highways.

Sgt. Nate Ludwig tells WHO Radio News the agency handled close to 40 accidents from Tuesday at 10 p.m. through 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. He advises drivers to slow down even though weather conditions may appear to be improved.

One of those crashes involved a couple of cars and a semi on southbound I-80/35 at Ashworth south of the mix-master this morning in Des Moines.

More than 100 miles of I-35 from Ames to the Minnesota border was closed for nearly 24 hours.

Weather forecasters say frigid temperatures will continue through at least the first week of March.
