Johnston child's cause of death released

JOHNSTON, Iowa – The Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the cause of death for a child who died while under the care of a Johnston woman at an unlicensed daycare was accidental traumatic asphyxia.

Investigators say 17-month-old Tucker Schneider died February 17th after emergency crews went to the home of 47-year-old Trina Mazza. Schneider was found unresponsive at the house two days prior.

Officials believe heavy weight or pressure caused the child to stop breathing.

Mazza is charged with child endangerment resulting in death while watching seven children in her unlicensed in-home daycare.

According to WHO Channel 13, Mazza's trial is scheduled for December 2nd.
