Crews rescue 11 people stranded on an Upper Iowa River island

WINNESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa- Crews rescued eleven people who had been kayaking and became stranded on an island in the Upper Iowa River, near Chimney Rock Park Tuesday afternoon. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office says one of the individuals had overturned and lost their kayak and was hanging onto tree branches awaiting rescue.

Decorah Fire and Rescue crews used a drone to find everyone and rescued them to safety.

The rescued individuals were family members ranging in age from 6 to 71 years old.

DNR and DOT enforcement also assisted at the scene.
