Flag Day continues growing history across the United States

DES MOINES, Iowa - Today is flag day across the upper Midwest and the United States.

According to legend, George Washington commissioned seamstress Betsy Ross to create the first American flag in 1776.

Flag Day began in 1916 when a Presidential proclamation was issued by President Woodrow Wilson.

Later, Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949.

From that point until now, June 14th has been Flag Day in the U.S.

There have been 27 official versions of the flag with the current version of 'Old Glory' becoming official on July 4th, 1960 as Hawaii became the 50th state the year before.
