Car hits utility line, kills power for 1,100 people in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa - An SUV knocks a utility pole down and kills power to a surrounding neighborhood in Des Moines.

Police say the driver hit the pole around 7 a.m. in the 3300-block of Ingersoll Avenue, which closed the road between 31st and 34th Streets.

"The outage effected about 1,100 customers and we restored all but three of those customers within the hour," said Geoff Greenwood with MidAmerican Energy.

One remaining customer without power is a restaurant close to the location of the crash.

The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
