Rules for Iowa sports betting to be set at Tuesday meeting

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission meets today to approve new rules and regulations for legalized sports betting in the state.

"They have established a date of August 15th at noon for those casinos that are ready to be able to offer legalized sports wagering," said Wes Ehrecke with the Iowa Gaming Association.

Ehrecke tells WHO Radio News the casinos that are ready hope everything is in place for the coming football season, but he also says the interest could go beyond the fall.

"As you roll into the winter you have March Madness and certainly golf is a high interest. So, football season coming up here in September should generate a lot of interest for both collegiate and professional wagering."

The meeting Tuesday will also focus on approving licenses for the Iowa casinos that have applied.

The path towards legalized sports betting in Iowa came during the most recent legislative session.
