Iowa leads nation in pigs ear dog treat salmonella poisoning MAP

DES MOINES, Iowa - The warning about pig ear treats for dogs continues into the weekend after people in 35 states have gotten sick.

Iowa has had more confirmed cases of than any other state, 23. Illinois has 10 confirmed cases, Missouri 7, and Nebraska none.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says 143 cases of drug-resistant salmonella poisoning is linked to the pigs’ ear dog treats. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, and fever.

The Food and Drug Administration says people get sick by handling the treats, dogs can get sick by eating them.
