More than $47 million bet on sports in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa -- It looks like the start of the college and pro football seasons is paying off for the 15 Iowa casinos with sports betting operations.

Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission Administrator Brian Ohorilko says more than $47 million have been bet on sports since it became legal on August 1st.

"The industry had requested an aggressive timeline, and we were able to meet that. The numbers are really an indication that it was important to move swiftly."

Ohorilko says the casinos are seeing benefits beyond the sports book, with other forms of gaming up seven percent since August 1st.

Of the $47 million bet, the Commission says nearly $40 million's been paid out in winnings.

Prairie Meadows in Altoona leads the way in the sports book operation, with nearly $18 million bet since August 1st.
