Iowa State Student Wins Seat On Ames City Council

History was made Tuesday night in the runoff election for the Ames City Council. 20 year old Iowa State University student Rachel Junck beat incumbent Councilman Chris Nelson in Ward 4.

Junck ended up with 54 percent of the vote. She is now the youngest woman ever to be elected to office in Iowa.

“This is a victory for students, longtime residents, tenants, and for our climate," Junck told WHO-TV Channel 13. "I’m honored and humbled to join the city council. It is incredible that we were able to increase our vote total by nearly 20 percent. It shows how much Ames values and is engaged with their local government.”

Junck is studying chemical engineering at ISU.
