Bill in Iowa Legislature to Restrict Types of Flags at State Buildings

DES MOINES, Iowa - A bill to limit the kinds of flags flown over public schools and governments buildings in Iowa is moving forward in the state legislature.

The bill in the senate is a response to a "Transgender Pride Flag" that was flown over the Iowa capitol in November.

The flag was flown at the request of the LGBTQ advocacy group Iowa Safe Schools in honor of the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

If the bill becomes law, only the U.S., Iowa state and Prisoner of War flags would be allowed over schools, city, county and state buildings.

State universities are seeking exceptions in the bill to allow conference flags, notably Big 10 and Big 12 flags to be flown.

Republican Senator Roby Smith of Davenport is sponsoring the bill. It's getting opposition from Democrats, including Senator Tony Bisignano of Des Moines.
