State of Iowa now has official CDC Coronavirus testing lab

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The State of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa is now able to test for Coronavirus, COVID-19.

There have been 82,000 cases of Coronavirus worldwide, and right now 12 people in Iowa are quarantined and being monitored for Coronavirus. The State Department of Health says none of the 12 has any symptoms of Coronavirus.

The Iowa laboratory has received testing kits from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and will perform tests if requested by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Anyone who is concerned should first see their doctor. If the physician suspects possible Coronovirus, they will escalate the case to the State Department of Health, which would then refer the case to the testing lab in Iowa City. After that, the testing lab will work with the doctor and CDC to determine if the person needs to be tested.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include a fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

The best way to prevent spread of Coronavirus is to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or upper sleeve, and to wash hands with soap frequently.
