Governor Reynolds to Speak at Pro-Life Rally at State Capitol

Iowa: The First Battleground For The 2016 Presidential Nomination

DRS MOINES, Iowa - A pro-life rally is scheduled for Monday at the Iowa state capitol rotunda.

Iowans for Life and the Iowa coalition of Pro-Life Leaders have organized the event which they say will feature Governor Kim Reynolds from 11 am to 3 pm. State Senator Jake Chapman of Adel and state Representative Steve Holt of Denison are also scheduled to speak.

Republicans, who control the legislature, are advancing an amendment to overturn a 2018 Iowa Supreme Court decision that found that the Iowa Constitution protects the right to an abortion. The bill, which has passed the Senate and is now in the House, says there's no fundamental right in the Iowa Constitution to abortion or public funding of the procedure.

A Senate subcommittee has also passed a bill to restore a 72-hour waiting period for abortions, which was also struck down in the same Supreme Court decision.
