Iowa Poll: Felons Should Have Voting Rights

DES MOINES, Iowa - A new poll says the majority of Iowans support giving felons in the state voting rights.

According to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, 63 percent of Iowans say felons should automatically be able to vote once they complete their sentence.

In addition, a plurality of those polled said felons should be required to pay restitution to victims before voting rights could be restored

State lawmakers are considering amending the state constitution to give felons the right to vote. The Iowa Senate has passed a bill to restore felon voting rights after they pay full restitution to victims.

Governor Kim Reynolds has called of the state legislature to bring a constitutional amendment that would say all felons are automatically eligible to vote once they have completed their sentences.

Any amendment would have to be approved by state lawmakers in two different legislative sessions, and then go before a public vote.
