Iowa Facing Blood Shortages Due To COVID-19 Coronavirus

The COVID-19 cornonavirus is causing blood shortages in Iowa. LifeServe Blood Center says it's had to cancel 50 blood drives in recent weeks.

"We hold them at schools and businesses and when they're closed we have no choice to cancel," says LifeServe spokesperson Claire DeRoin. "We've lost about 2,000 units of blood due to these blood drive cancellations.

She says they're urging people to make a donation during expanded hours at their offices across the state. The Iowa Department of Public Health has exempted them from the gatherings of 10 recommendation.

"It's very important to come out and donate and you can feel good and safe doing it," DeRoin says.
