Iowa Poll Shows 50% Favor College Athletes Making Money on their Names

DES MOINES, Iowa - A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows 50 percent support for allowing college athletes to profit from their name, image or likeness.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents are opposed, while 12% aren't sure.

Iowa lawmakers have been considering a bill to let college athletes profit off their images.

California approved the practice last year, stipulating that it would start in 2023. Since then, many states have looked at similar measures.

The Iowa Poll showed popularity for letting college athletes profit from their names, images and likenesses diminished progressively among older respondents.

Sixty percent of those under 35 favor the practice, along with 56 percent of respondents between 35 and 54.

A majority people surveyed who are 55 or older - 51 percent - are against allowing athletes to make money off their name. Only 39 percent of people in that age group favor the practice.

The Iowa poll of 800 Iowa adults was conducted March 2-5 , with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
