West Des Moines Closes Park Facilities Over COVID-19

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - The city of West Des Moines has taken measures in its parks to fight the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus.

The city has left parks and trails open to the public, but has closed off playground equipment and picnic shelters until further notice. It has also shut down all park restrooms and drinking fountains.

West Des Moines' Raccoon River Park Dog Park and Archery Facility, along with tennis and basketball courts are still open, but the city has prohibited team sports, pickup games and contact play.

The City says signs will be posted at all parks to inform the public of the new restrictions, but that it will not install caution tape or fencing at the parks. It's urging residents to help keep family, friends, neighbors and the community safe.

West Des Moines Mayor Steve Gaer signed a new proclamation Monday that extends power granted to City Manager Tom Hadden until April 16, authorizing Hadden to take actions necessary to provide for the public health, safety and welfare.
