Woman Accused of Abandoning Baby on Porch Makes First Court Appearance

The woman accused of abandoning her newborn baby on a South Omaha front porch earlier this week was in court Thursday afternoon.

28 year old Maria Piaz-Perez is facing charges for child abuse and abandonment, Class 1 misdemeanors, after giving a statement to Omaha Police.

Omaha Police investigators determined Piaz-Perez had recently given birth and left the baby at a residence. In her statement to police, Piaz-Perez admitted to giving birth to the child at home on Monday. It's not clear if anyone was with her for the delivery or in the car afterward.

Following the birth, witnesses saw her car pull into several different driveways until she found a home with people inside. Piaz-Perez then left the child in a bag on the porch of the home near 15th and U.

The baby was taken to the hospital after being discovered and is now in the care of a foster family.

Piaz-Perez's bond was set at $150,000. Judge Mary Stevens said the allegations were "troubling" with "life and death consequences."
