Iowa Man Charged for Violating COVID-19 Rules After Throwing Party

A Greene County man has misdemeanor charges for breaking social distancing rules after hosting a party earlier this month.

23-year-old Riley Rittgers of Paton was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors for allowing people under 18 to consume alcohol and violation of an Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) policy.

Roughly 40 people under the age of 21 were charged with possession of alcohol on Rittger's property. Social gatherings in groups larger than 10 have been temporarily outlawed under Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ declaration of a public health disaster emergency on March 17.

Police agencies in central Iowa have not reported any widespread complaints of gatherings involving 10 or more people. Des Moines Police say they have not issued any citations to businesses or gatherings over violations of the current policy.
